Perhaps here will be a good place to start thinking about potential themes for the monthly competition once it gets up and running. Here are a few for starters:

Things that go bump in the night.

The morning after

A storms a coming

Precious moment

Back in the day...(monocrome)

I could go on but will spare you, for now :outta::outta:

Perhaps a still life and macro option, action/sports

I was thinking more of conceptual themes that allow the imagination to take hold, and also invites interpretations that could include still life, macro and action etc - But that's just me, people may prefer just to have categories. :confuse:

I think we have some great suggestions here including the mood suggestion (AND MINE OF COURSE) . I guess its up to admin to decide which ones they prefer and if anymore will come in. I guess we are letting people know in advance the themes for the month?

How about one showing D.O.F. ?

Two birds with one stone, a comp and shows those who are not sure of what DOF is all about what it is.:)

Good idea re the DOF :top:. On the AP website they have an explanation underneath each comp heading and DPS does the same for assignments so this be a good way of encouraging people to explore beyond just the title of the assignment.

Im loving the idea of an open comp, maybe once a year, last comp of the season if you will. not sure about wether its best to be specific though with other suggestions or if better to leave interpretation open. for example all the trouble with the candid comp, if the subject had jsut been "people" it would have caused no arguments. we would have had a large variety of pics (studio, candid, models, sports, and on and on) but at least they woudl have all been people).

how about a leading lines comp? always love a leading line me :)
my other suggestions would be simple but easily monitored subjects like,

sport
people
landscape
mono
splash of colour
macro/close up
still life
open

love the DoF idea, and like Cindy's ideas a lot too. they seem to be ones that you could get your imagination working with.

Thanks jeni :beercheer:

i was trying to suggest ideas that would get the imagination going and that could include all styles and techniques from macro, monocrome, manipulated, DOF, to action/speed, etc etc in the interpretation of the comp title

all these ides are good, i think we're gonna spread some of these suggestions out over the year & incorporate them into John's assignments.
It's great to have input from members but it's gotta be manageable for admin. i can't wait to see what's up & coming for future comps :top:

7 Deadly sins
Pride is excessive belief that your photos are better than everyone else's. They are not, mine are.

Envy is the feeling you get when someone gets out his 500mm f2.8.

Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more memory than is really needed, like 24 Mpixels per shot.

Lust is an inordinate craving for the pictures that Stew takes.

Anger is manifested in the individual who constantly tries to take clean astro pictures when thunderstorms are forecast.

Greed is the desire for 9 frames per second or more - go buy a video camera !!

Sloth is the avoidance of physical or mental work, like using anything except "auto" setting.

Sorry Paul, couldn't resist it :D
