I have seen these advertised for a while and finally decided to try one.

My D80 always has a battery grip attached so is a fair weight to carry around, especially when a big lens is fitted. Neck straps can be a pain in the neck and they always hold your camera in the most vulnerable position.

This little gizmo makes my camera a lot more comfortable to carry around and far less tiring.

However, carrying is one thing. Using the camera is an entirely different matter. The strap, I find, holds my hand in a most uncomfortable position and it is impossible to reach the preview button. My hand is pressed against the memory card cover and the slightest movement causes this to be opened.

All of this seems to indicate that I have the strap too tight but any looser and it does not do the job when carrying the camera. I tried it without the battery grip to see if there was any improvement but it actually made matters worse.

It wasn't expensive and I'll give it away to anyone who wants one. But I won't fit it to my camera again.

I use the same hand strap on my D200 & battery grip. I have the pad across my knuckles when using the camera and can access the controls and buttons with no problems. I bought mine about 3 years ago, it's never been off the camera since.

I must say... i like mine. I know what you mean Nigel about it being a bit awkward at times but i just get my hand in the right position. Luckily my memory card cover doesn't pop open.
It's definitely better than trying to carry your cam in your hand without one. They take the weight nicely. After a shoot I did in May at a party, my hand really did ache for a day or so after like i'd strained a muscle! Wish I had this strap then

Update..! Let's try a different camera. Nikon F90 as I have been using mine recently.

This one is even worse. Not very effective for carrying it even.:( OK, better than nothing but not as effective as it was on the D80. But trying to use the F90 was worse than the D80, the strap was just "in the way" and prevented me from reaching everything properly. It is as though these are designed for smaller hands, or for bigger cameras, or simply designed for Martians to use. :D

But I am so glad that people have replied who find these comfortable and useful. After all, any equipment review is simply someone's personal opinion and if we all felt the same about everything then the world would be a very dull place.

We wouldn't be laughing at Canon users either. :outta:

The homemade strap I had on the D80 was perfect. For speed of use the hand strap is way faster that neck strap :top:

Yep, made myself another one just like it but a bit softer (nylon was a bit sharp, wide thick bootlace works wonders :top:)
