I often have to take pics at dance schools. They never let me use a flash, they dont stand still long and the lighting is usually terrible.
Here's a link (http://www.idigitize.co.uk/wolstanton/) to my last job. Any advice or comments welcome :top:

thanks Kim, yep the little ones are the best. Really enjoy these shows, but hard work taking pics, hence the amount of blurry ones that get left in

Great shots Ben, we have been shooting at the YAD Rising Stars, and have come up with the same problems, Not enough light, no one stood still for longer than a millisecond.

However I got a foot in with the lighting guy, and he is going to install some big colored floods, should be done for this weekends Discworld dress Rehearsal. Will let you know how that goes

What sort of ISO and settings were you using?
I can imagin the ISO was cranked right up but it would be intresting to know what the shuter speeds were etc.
Do you make enough from these to consider hiring a D3 to maybe add that extra stop of exposure?

Great images though, i wil be trying a bit of this myself as my two of my children are performing in july :D

i think they were iso 1600, f2.8 and about 1/10 to 1/60th sometimes faster. Nikon 24-70, so no vr but handheld.

I don't get enough to warrant a D3, not yet anyway lol
I don't even get enough to worry about processing and noise removal.
But yep full frame would help.

I actually produce DVDs (as in filming) of the show as the main reason for going. I work with another guy who likes to go on 2 nights so we get an idea of what we are filming. Then thought I might as well take pics while im there too.

Some great shots here especially given the conditions! I would love to have a go at stuff like this just don't have the confidence at the moment! It's not confidence about being in public or doing the job, it's about settings and knowing that I will actually manage to get a picture! Perhaps if I could do it with someone initially then I could take the plunge! hehe!
