Ok we have been through this a million times before.

However I want something good, I have looked and Manfrotto, Slik, Velbon, Giotos but being a tight wad I dont like to spend money willy nilly. I have a budget of about £100, I am not looking for a brand new one, again, I would feel sick bouncing a new one and its usually the first thing I dump on the floor if I am climbing.

Well 190xproB looks good, Slik E3Bpro (I think) looks good both fit new heads etc, Giotos looks really bulky but says it light (which I am not sure about light, my old velbon weighs 2.5kg and thats light to me. Velbon Sherpa I can find one cheap enough (any clues)

Also please tell me of any that I have missed.

Oh by the way MY 450D ABSOLUTELY :top: ROCKS !!!!!

It is the 190X Pro B 2007 model.

The new one is just as sturdy but they have made a design change to the centre column function.

It isn't the lightest but does the business of holding my camera including the Battery Grip and 70-300mm with no fuss whatsoever. :)

mines an old, well used Velbon Sherpa 600. think i paid £50 inc postage off ebay. hasnt got any of them padded hand grips, but ive figured if i get desperate i can make them easy enough lol. its much better than my cheap £10 thing i got from Argos!

Exactly what i wanna put on it :top: I just seen a 600 Sherpa, I am sort of going one or the other on this I like Velbon, but I have had to butcher my trusty old VEB 3 for Anges chair, which may I had has solved masses of problems, so Jeni does the velbon hold a 70-300mm?

I'll agree with this my 190 has been in 3 inchs of mud, the sea, a river, snow, kicked, dropped and its still works like new. For your hight its good as the center column raises up

The Giottos is anything but bulky John, which model are you looking at. I have one, its pushing it with a D300 but OK. Stef has the manfrotto 55xprob. Its much more bulky but 100 times more sturdy. the 190 is probably the way to go.

the head is a good one to start with if its the 390rc which is the one I have im tempted to upgrade the head on my one later for a three way one just so I can have a little more control if you go for the manfrotto I dont think you'll be upset with it.

ive no idea, ive not got a 70-300 to try. got a 55-200, and it was ok with that. only ever tried indoors with it though. at first i the legs a bit awkward as you can have each of them any angle you like, ive got used to it now though and its great if you want to point the camera down more than the head will allow!

That's the one albeit the new one.

The head is bulky, I have the 460 MG which is Mag Alloy and a lot less bulky.:)

Cheers Ben, yeah I want a 3 way, once I have the tripod level I can adjust on 2 axis to get the horizon and vericals where I want, I had considered a ball but I had one and didn't get on with it.

The 460 MG is a 3 way, works a treat.

Worth getting one of those flash shoe spirit levels too. :)

It was this one Ben Giottos, (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Giottos-MTL9251B-Tripod-with-MH50001-Head-FREE-DELIVERY_W0QQitemZ320379229661QQcmdZViewItemQQptZU K_CamerasPhoto_CameraAccessories_TripodsSupports?h ash=item4a981715dd&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A1|66%3A2|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1| 293%3A1|294%3A50#ebayphotohosting) I do like the look and the price even better :top: But I was told by the camera mart that it was bulky, although it does not look like it to me

I think all 3 way heads are kinda bulky, the legs then become a little irrelevant. I really wouldnt like to comment on the build quality of the giottos 3 way head, as i have no idea. The ball heads are good though.
All i can say is, i did have an issue with the collar on the giottos legs. where the center column goes in. They sent me a brand new set of legs even though the tripod was well over a year old.
Id say that the manfrotto are probably slightly better build, but at the same time, ive been really happy with the giottos.
Using your 450 or 300d they should both sit quite happily and sturdy.

Finally went with the Giottos with the 3 way head but ordering a Ball to have a go. The head is a little bulky but I am a clumsy git and the 2 handles mean that I will probably always be holding one so I probably wont kick it over.

I am impressed with the build of it, very light for the size and mega sturdy with the legs that spread almost to flat if needed.

Got it for £65 postage free in the end too so for a brand new tripod I think that was worth getting and another £40 for the ball head which has not arrived yet.

I personally find Ben's giottos ball head a tad annoying. Mine is the manfrotto 488 rc4 head & i do prefer the way it locks/unlocks. Ben prefers his, each to their own i guess :confuse:

Yeah, I am going to give a ball head a try and the bloke selling is letting me send it back if I don't like it, which is nice of him, although I did buy the tripod and always get my filters and accessories from him too, so he is accommodating like that. I don't find the 5001 head too bad, build is solid (alu) great release mechanism, sort of a snap lock thing going on. best thing I like is it has 3 levels.
