Have you tried System Restore - back to before the problem arose?

Lynn... had a quick look around the Adobe forums and got the following that may help...

In PSE editor under Edit->Preferences: check Performance settings:

(taking the cursor/mouse on each option words will display the description of that option)

Set the total % PSE can use of available RAM. Increase if you have available RAM.

After making this changes close PSE and launch again.

It may or may not help, but lets hope it does :)

Another answer...

"Could not complete your request because of a program error."

Solution
Re-create the Photoshop Elements preferences file.

To re-create the Photoshop Elements preferences file:

Quit Photoshop Elements.
Locate the preferences file for the Editor in Photoshop Elements:

On Windows XP: Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Editor\Photoshop Elements 5 Prefs.psp

On Windows Vista: Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Editor\Photoshop Elements 5 Prefs.psp
Rename the extension for the file (for example, to Photoshop Elements 5 Prefs.old).
Start the Editor in Photoshop Elements. Photoshop Elements creates a new preferences file.

Note: This procedure requires you to locate the Photoshop Elements preferences file by its full name, including the extension, which is located inside a hidden folder. By default, Windows Explorer doesn't show hidden files, hidden folders, and file name extensions that it recognizes.

To show hidden files, hidden folders, and all filename extensions in Windows Explorer:

On Windows XP:

In Windows Explorer, choose Tools > Folder Options.
Click the View tab in the Folder Options dialog box.
In Advanced Settings, select Show Hidden Files And Folders.
Deselect Hide File Extensions For Known File Types.
Click OK.

On Windows Vista:

In Windows Explorer, choose Organize > Folder And Search Options.
Click the View tab in the Folder Options dialog box.
In Advanced Settings, select Show Hidden Files And Folders.
Deselect Hide Extensions For Known File Types.
Click OK.

*** this will delete any preferences you may have created prior to the cock up so just bear that in mind before you change anything ***

Thanks Stef - you have been busy for me - will have a go or should I say I'll get Dennis to have a go for me! Will let you know. Off on holiday to Cuba at the weekend so may not get it done until I get back.
