I use FreeUK - I have seven sites for various purposes and they cost nothing.

Just be wary of hosts offering unlimited bandwidth. - they cannot physically mean it, or they would all go bust.

Be wary of 'help' sites and 'the top ten web hosts in the uk' sites. like these http://www.thetop10bestwebhosting.com/uk/

notice the top 3 hosting companies on this, are actually all the same company.

Go for 1 with decent support, you will likely need it and use it.
I had to get some scripts installed here for the gallery to work, something that only the hosts could do on their side.
I used the contact form, within 10 minutes, the scripts were installed and a message back saying so.

Dont be shy on asking for what you want. We needed bandwidth and disc space here. I contacted my host, they put both up. Hence the quick increase in pic file sizes for here.

Basically, a big thumbs up for 4UHosting. They dont offer unlimited anything, they are not the cheapest. But the servers are in the Uk, the site runs quick and the support has been top. This is my 8th site with them. After being concerned that maybe they couldnt offer what we needed for this site, they changed my hosting to suit.

From me, http://www.4uhosting.co.uk/ :top:

thats good advice Ben, goes along the lines of 'if something seems to good to be true, then it probably is'!

thanks Ben, from my point of view, to take advantage of the quality of the paid for hosting, I'd have to be a lot more knowledgeable than i am about web design, Im just looking for somewhere that lets me dump low res galleries produced in CS3, with pretty basic layouts, sort of a clickpic type environment without the bells and whistles, but which allows larger files (1000x 800 at around 500kb I suspect would be sufficient)

I know there is flickr, but its layout is too "chaotic" for my ordered engineering mind ;)

I've been with ww.one.com for 2x years now, not one problem. They have real time support, so if you have a problem you talk to someone almost immediately. They have just started catering for togers with a photo galleries. I haven't tried the galleries yet, but I shall at some point :top:

You do have to pay for your www at some point, but it's a small amount, less than Flickr charges me for using their services.
