I was wondering what the thoughts were of trying to run a bonus ball lotto system to raise funds.
The idea being we sell 49 balls at £2.30 (paypal takes about 30p) the winner would receive half the money, the rest being put into tog247 costs and prize fund.
That way the winner takes £50 and tog247 collects the rest, about £40/45 after fees etc
If most of us use paypal and we had a button to pay the £2.30, it would be pretty simple to set up.
Maybe run it 6 times a year, and that would be the cost of hosting and software covered.
If only ten people entered, the winner, if there was one, would only receive half the money still. If no winner, half the money could be added to the following prize draw.
Just a good way of raising the annual costs for the site, plus giving you the chance to win £50 too.
Any thoughts??? Not sure if there are any legal issues with it??
If people entered for the 6 draws, thats only £13.80 a year. for the chance of winning £300!

Doing this sort of thing at work, round the office etc might be OK but I think there may be legal issues on the net. If not - great, I'm all for it :top:
Edit - looks like there is no problem legally.
I would suggest monthly, say 1st Sat of each month?
Might be a problem to sell 49 balls though.

If the balls don't all sell, does it roll over if the winning ball is not selected from the balls that sold?
I think you may have to look at gaming issues as Nigel said though.

yes, id do a rollover, if no one won, but half the money like the prize would be if someone did win.
ie sell 30 balls, £60 divided by 2 = £30. so if won, the winner would get £30, if no one won, then £30 would be rolled on to the following month. an idea i'll leave til we have 49 regular members, then i'll look into the gambling licenses and if it was considered to be gambling at all.

Just to see if this is gonna work. I shall suggest, we do 6 draws per year, 1 every 2 months. Sure we could do more, but this would be a good start. Unless ppl really want 12, 1 a month. I will adjust this post to suit.
If everyone pms me a number for a ball, 1 to 49. you can have more than 1 of course. Balls cost £2.00 + fees.
Before we break any laws or take any money, I will just compile a list here to get an idea on interest.
It would be easy to charge for 6 draws in one go, minimising fees and to save checking up for £2.00 every other month.
Therefore, if you would like to enter, pm me your chosen ball and i will enter it to the list here, when we have 49 balls taken, I will then wait for 49 payments. When we have the 49 payments, the draw will start from the first Saturday of the month, after this day.
I know not everyone uses paypal, but some will some wont. It will get very confusing to charge different amounts depending on how you pay.
Paypal charge 20p + 3.4% on every transaction. 6 * 2 = £12 + 20p + 3.4% = £12.62.
£12.00 * 49 = £588 .. 6 prizes of £50 = £300, leaving £288 for tog247. annual cost of tog = £150 ish. leaving a £10 prize for the monthly comp, enough for a decent sized print or a nice mug etc.
So... if you would like a ball to enter 6 draws for a year, you need to pm me a number, then you will be expected to pay £12.62. Im sure this sounds fair.
If thoughts are to go 12 months, then we are about £25 a year.
The list is on another thread in this forum to check available balls.
Please dont pay any money until we have a full list.
Our other option is to get a sponsor that dictates what we should and shouldnt discuss in the forum, how big the ads should be, wether or not we should ban miffy  . The rest is history. :banghead:

I did a bit of google research, and there are tons of place/organisations that do this as fundraising...

Far be for me to rock the boat..but why are you giving yourself all this trouble for raising funds,
most of the people here was premier members of the other place, and we was then prepared to pay £20 per month for the privalige...why cannot you do the same on here?

We really need some more takers on this. Its much better than having any membership fees. Its cheaper and gives you a chance to win money back. it will also mean prizes for the comps.
Please pm me a number you would like between 1 and 49, check the other thread in this forum to see the available numbers.
Cheers

I don't want to sound negative but I have 2 concerns about this.
If this is classed as gambling, then the uk laws are pretty strict, and as the members own the site, any laws broken would make us all responsible.
I think someone should check out the laws properly, or at the very least put something in place to protect the members?
The other concern is if this is being done to raise money for the site that is great, but if it's used to raise money for prizes to attract new members, then you could attract members that come here just for the prizes.
I don't think this is fair for the members who put their money in to this so that an outsider can walk away with their cash?

Dave, I researched this when we first came up with the idea and did find that it was totally legal to run. It was several months ago but i will dig up the paperwork to prove and protect everyone.
Your second concern is of course the whole issue and the reason for this site being set up in the first place.
That is why the comp rules exist.
The running costs for the site come before the prizes. This is the main reason for the bonus ball.
We have a huge gallery space limit, very few ads and no premier membership or annual fees for members.
The way i think we all want it to stay.
I want people to think of this as a small £13 ish a year for the chance to win £300.
On top of that it keeps tog alive.
There is no huge fund going to comp winnners that do not 'join' the site.
As for starting it now. I think the math would be quite complicated if we do have a winner. The list is pretty sparse.

Yes, I saw that they have to make 15 posts before they can enter, but that is a small amount that is easy to obtain, once done, they enter, win and walk away with the prize never to be seen again.
I'm not a big contributor myself, but I do contribute where I can, and visit when I have time, but I'm not here for the competitions, or prizes, I get far more from the gallery and reading others comments. So if there are prizes for the competitions, it won't affect me unless I participate in the bonus ball for the chance to win £300.
My view is that the bonus ball is run to cover costs and any profits should go to the admin here as you put your time in to running the site. I can't imagine the profits being much, but it would be a token thank you from the members for all your hard work.
So all I'm saying is I'd rather you get the money over an outsider who simply joins to take and not give.
