I think it's about time we had a boost of comments in the galleries :)
We are all busy with one thing or another but I have noticed over the past few weeks quite a few people log in & view the gallery, or even post a pic but don't then go on to comment on any other pics.
I know life gets in the way LoL but if we all had a little push, just 2 or 3 comments when we log in, it will make all the difference to the people posting pics & learning from critique, getting feedback or a general "well done".
We all like to get comments on our pics or we wouldn't post them, so come on folks...
Make your site a bit more excitig! ;)
It's a real shame to see pics sit there with one or even NO comments. It doesn't give people the will to keep posting.
I know there are folks that post regularly in the gallery & it is very much appreciated from the site & the recipients, i'm sure!

I try to get round to commenting if I feel a pic deserves it.
Sometimes it is easy to offend people if you comment on a 'bad' pic so I might abstain with my comments at times.

I saw this thread a while back and have to agree.
I tend to get tired of looking at aimless shots tho and wish there was a little more inspiring work on here. I take hundreds of pics a month but would only ever post up work that was worthy of comment in my mind.
Do you not agree that there is an awful lot of "Ordinary shots" on here that Auntie Marg might take with her little old point and shoot.
I dont mean to offend anyone on this site at all, but I will always comment (when I'm on) on a pic that jumps out at me!!!
Please please lets see something out of the ordinary!!!!!

When it comes to commenting, I often find it difficult to think of anything meaningful to say and so either say nothing or something unoriginal like "good colours" or "good detail".
As for only posting out of the ordinary pics, I wonder how many would be posted at all if we all stopped to wonder whether it was sufficiently 'out of the ordinary'. I guess we all try to post shots that have some good qualities that Auntie Marg wouldn't achieve.

I appreciate your thoughts Ian, and that you don't want to offend,
but....(always a but :))
Some people like to share their 'nice' pics.
Some are learning creative skills.
Some are learning technical skills.
Some are taking their early steps into the semi-pro/pro field.
Some are already pro.
Ordinary is a hard word to fit in when members are from very different levels and backgrounds.
If a picture appears to be taken by Auntie Marg, it is good for a member to 'tactfully' receive feedback so they can improve and they can take their skill further.
The other thing from the viewers perspective is we all like different shots too.
Stef likes her animal portraits, to some they might look like 'just another shot of a monkey', but she is trying to perfect them. Someone like Bev, who is into arty street shots, might not appreciate Stefs work, and vice versa.

Not sure i appreciate your comments Ian, this is a friendly photographic site, with people of all abilities in photography, if you want a pro site with all the photographs of pro quality then i am sure there are some out there for you. I think the best thing about this site is the fact that no matter what your ability then you can feel comfortable with putting up your work and getting feed back on it, this all helps people to progress, should they want to, but they may just enjoy photography for the fun aspect and enjoy a nice comment or two.
Nigel you picked pow this week and you commented on the great photo's in the gallery, and how hard it was to choose from the high standard this week, now you appear to agree with Ian that there is only run of the mill pictures put on here. You can't agree with both statements.
p.s our very own Aunt Marg (Miffy) i am sure will have something to say later lol!!!!!!

One of the aims of TOG247 is to improve members' photography, and to that end members are encouraged to submit images for comment, whatever the standard.
It is comments on photographs submitted by newcomers to photography that are most valuable, and as a result some members have joined the group as out and out novices and have developed into very fine photographers. Those of us who have commented on their early submissions would like to think that we have had a hand in their learning curve.
It is not only outstanding images that need comments. It is so easy to praise outstanding images, much more difficult and time consuming to give constructive criticism to others.
TOG247 is very much a close friendly site, we know each other even though many of us have never met, and as a result we do share photographs of family, holidays and so on. These may well be Auntie Marg photographs to you but to many they are welcome, friendly, and interesting images.
PS - I was writing this whilst Kim, Harold and Ben were posting so was unaware of their views.

It's Auntie Marg here, i have just got back from looking at your state of the art, ultra modern, high tech holiday snaps, i saw three sunsets at Cleveleys (Almost as good as mine from Porthleven - but never mind, you'll improve;)):top:. Loved your red arrows pictures, you need to have a word with Kooky, she will put you right, so that next time you do them properly;);) I love that you are doing portraits now (Maybe you will be able to get a job taking the annual primary school pictures, when you have practiced a bit more):top: Grandma will love the pictures of Lennox. Get in touch with Ben, he's just won a major prize in a national competition for his dog study. LOVE your pictures of the high street and harbour at Clovelly. Maybe an evening course might point you towards taking an original aspect of the village rather than the same views that MILLIONS of Clovelly day trippers take every year:(!Your work seems to becoming along nicely, so don't give up, keep trying and then perhaps you could join a nice friendly site such as TOG 247 where i'm sure you will be able to post some of your pics that are "worthy of comment":)
Lots of Love
Your every loving Auntie Marg (please find enclosed a £5 note for you to put towards your new camera, when you decide to move on from your old "Point and Shoot" I'm sure you will find that your pictures will really come on, and they won't be "aimless" and maybe even a little "more inspiring")

...
Not quite.....
Yes I agree that there are SOME run-of-the-mill piccies on here, but as I said in POW, there are some real stunners.
And as Ben said, we have toggers from all walks of life. Total beginners to seasoned pros.
The person just starting with his first camera phone will be gobsmacked with the majority of the piccies here.
I am gobsmacked with lots of these piccies and I congratulate most of the toggers that posted them.
Yes there are some 'normal' or 'ordinary' or 'boring' pix but that is my view as an experienced togger, many of these will really impress the newcomers.
But someone who has "seen it all before" may well feel that it is time to move on, find another life, take up fishing perhaps. But don't hang around knocking the newbies 'cos they aren't as good as the pros.
We all have different tastes in piccies and our choices of POW will reflect that.
Many people are progressing in this field and our tastes and opinions will evolve - that is a part of the progression process.
I was asked HOW I manage to chose a POW and why I chose a particular one (or a particular few).
To do this we have to climb off the seat we usually sit on. Judge a piccie by its merits but also on its appeal to different levels of toggers.
We don't usually get it far wrong, going by the comments that follow the POW page each week.
OK, so no piccie will have universal appeal or be absolutely perfect. ( You may note I never score a pic 10/10 - your pic is outstanding if I score it a 9 )
Any judging will be a personal opinion but when judging other peoples efforts, their abilities (real or claimed) have to be taken into consideration.
It isn't a boxing match. The winner doesn't KO the opponent. It isn't a 100M race, first home is the winner.
This is a pastime, a hobby, a way of life, an opportunity to express oneself, it is ART to some of us.
So opinions will always be a conversation piece. BUT... they ARE only opinions.
"When I want your opinon I'll give it to you" - Andy Capp. c. 1965

I take hundreds of pics a month but would only ever post up work that was worthy of comment in my mind.
Not one single photographer on Tog has such a specific style or skill that they could correctly select purely their best shots to post. Not on Tog, not any website, camera club, college or university.
You have to be a master to be able to selectively correctly choose your best work, and even then there is plenty to be learnt.
(how many of the great composers learnt from audiences reactions to their work, and wrote their next pieces with that influence?)
Every single person could take a hundred of your shots and end up with a different number of keepers.
Take them to a Degree tutor/master, you might be left with none!
A large part of becoming a better togger is to be able to get better at choosing your better work, by posting your pics on a site like tog, you can improve this. The more people there are choosing, the more help you will get.
By not posting them, you will only rely on your own knowledge.
It's not all about what YOU think makes a picture good, it is quite often another person that will point out why your pic is good!
One day you wont take 100's of pictures a month to only post a few that you think are good enough, you will post 100's too.
You don't know how many pictures any person on here has deleted to get down to one or two to post, to then not get many comments and then labelled as 'ordinary'.
Hence, although you wished not to offend, it is quite easy to see why you may have done.

Ouch!! :-) I see your point Jan, tho never admitted to being one that could get the out of the ordinary pics. You will see that I do not have an extensive gallery on here and realise that my ability with a camera is still limited. As I said I have no intention of upsetting peeps. It was merely a comment that inspired feedback. There is absolutely nothing wrong with "ordinary pics and many of you have reminded me that tastes and abilities differ. I shall look at the images on here with a new understanding from now on and try to post one at least a week into the gallery.
Lastly I apologise to you Auntie Marg from the heart.

Awww God bless you, Ian---come 'ere--:hugs:
What a lovely post--You've been nicer about this than I would have been--I would have gone off in a hissy fit, mumbling stuff about " taking my pictures somewhere else then" or" stuff 'em--the miserable lot of sods" !! You have beeen man enough to realise that maybe you didn't put your point across quite as you meant to, & big enough to admit it & apologise.
All of us have jumped in (me in particular--sorry what i said about your pics:o--they're lovely, i was just getting my own back 'cause you said ours were ordinary!!;) )--& been less than kind with our comments--even though we were defending ourselves---- & for you to take all that on board & make the post you have just sent, is humbling. You have shown yourself to be accepting of criticism (unlike me :o), willing to listen & learn from others comments, ( unlike me :o), & big enough to apologise when you know you've got it wrong, (unlike me :o ).
All those attributes are very important on Tog, & i'm sure this silly episode will now be put away & we can all get on & post & comment to our heart's content !! There ARE some amazing pictures in the various galleries on here, taken by some very talented toggers (unlike me :D), but as Ben said (lovely post btw, Ben:top:), we all put up our "normal, Auntie Marg"pics as well, but we do that because we are with a bunch of friends, & it's just like showing your holiday snaps around at work---they're not all brilliant, but you show them around anyway, secretly hoping that someone will point out that " THAT'S a good one !!" That's what Tog is like really--a bunch of mates that we want to like our pictures--& it's lovely when they do, & helpful when they suggest ways to improve a shot, 'cause you remember next time!!
Ok, enough rabbiting on !!! Give us a :hugs:--do you want mash or chips with your pie, sweetheart???:top:
