Really considering a iMac now. Any users got any tips before I buy one? What to go for, what to avoid.... ?

Looking at a 24" which comes with 4GB ram and 640GB drive minimum anyway. But they all have these horrible glossy screens...

the glossy screen is not an issue as long as they are not in direct light ( dont have a window behind you on a sunny day) or you'll have quite a bit of reflection. other things you might want to take into account new photo editing software plug in's things like that but the. I will say you wont regret getting a mac I love mine

do it do it do it
To me, the glossy screen is an added bonus, stunning to look at & for viewing pics. Incredible difference when you compare to non glossy screens. As Bryan said... if you don't have a window behind you...can't fault it. If i needed anymore comps in this house I'd get more 24" iMacs without a doubt :)
Just amazing :D

Playing with one again lastnight. You're right, at the right angle and right lighting, that screen is actually an advantage. Wouldn't want it on a lappy though where you are at the mercy of whatever lighting is around you. Getting greener by the minute! :D Not going to be long....

i have the same screen on my macbook too, the thing is, it's easy to slightly adjust the angle so it's really not a problem
oh & students can get the £1199 iMac for £1055 with an NUS card :D

Nigel, don't keep me in suspense. DID YOU GET ONE? Lol
I peeked at your profile & it says you are on a Mac but you're not shouting about it :confuse:

OK, I'll shout about it. :D
It is perfectly right what they say about the Mac - "buy a Mac & you'll never go back" and "They just work - beautifully"
Cannot see why ppl waste time with PCs nowadays, they are far inferior.
But I used a PC for years and was perhaps a bit "scared" of taking the plunge. I needn't have been. I had made the decision, 24" iMac and was just preparing to order one this weekend when they announce the new range (to coincide with the W7 release). :D
So for a measly £150 extra, they have gone to 27" led backlit display, 2560x1440 resolution, more powerful graphics card (same as mac pro), processor now up to 3.06 GHz, a 1TB harddrive, bluetooth keyboard and new bluetooth "magic mouse".
It is beautiful. I am now the best togger in the country - all my pix look so much better.... :D
Sincere thanks to everyone who advised me on this subject. I asked everyone I knew "in the business" and didn't get a single negative comment about the mac. Now I see why.. :)

Congrats Nigel, a wise move. it doesnt take long to realise you'll never look back lol.
We're still a bit in limbo with a few snow leopard issues regarding some of the smaller software companies, but ironing out quickly.
At least we have an operating system with a nice name lmao, I'd rather have snow leopard which is 10.6 than windows 7 which is really windows 6.1.

OK, so I found a downside. Only a little one.
My scanner wouldn't work with it. Mustek said they didn't have a Mac driver for it but would let me know when (if) they wrote one.
Don't bother Mustek, I bought an Epson scanner. It works MUCH better than the other one did on windoze. :D
